Journalist & Editor

I’m Maxim Edwards, a journalist and editor based in Berlin. You can get in touch with me on the contact page of this website.

I have spent a decade in editorial roles across independent media, including openDemocracy, OCCRP and Global Voices. These days I’m an editor at Bellingcat, the open source investigative collective.

My main passions are cross-border and investigative journalism, modern languages and literature. My work generally focuses on nationalism, migration, minorities and European policy, with a strong but not exclusive focus on Central and Eastern Europe. My writing and reporting can be found in The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Foreign Policy among other publications.

I have hostile environment training and have reported from 15 countries on an eclectic mix of topics, from Europe’s border-industrial complex to refugees in the South Caucasus and far-right extremism in Germany.

Alongside journalistic reports I have edited policy and academic papers for a number of clients, provided consultancy and analysis for NGOs on human rights in Eastern Europe and written a book chapter about the politics of Moldova. I’ve also translated essays, op-eds and investigative journalism from Russian to English.

I can sometimes be found in the field, usually behind a desk and occasionally on Mastodon and LinkedIn.
